How it works

Versus runs head-to-head battles between any two things. A battle has exactly two sides, runs for exactly 100 days, and ends with whichever side has the higher total.

1. Every battle is two sides and a clock

When a battle is created, the server records a start time and sets the end time to start + 100 days. That end time is stored in the database and never changes. The countdown you see is calculated from it, not from your device clock. If your computer's time is wrong, the countdown is still right.

2. You pick a side and contribute

Choose either side, enter an amount of $1 or more, and pay. There is no account to create and nothing to bid against.

3. The score moves when the payment clears

A side's total only goes up after our payment provider confirms the money server-side. Until then your contribution sits as pending and counts for nothing. That is why the total on screen is always money that actually arrived.

4. At zero, the battle is over

The server stops accepting contributions the moment the end time passes, whatever the page in front of you happens to be showing. Payments already in flight are given a short window to be confirmed, then the totals are frozen, the winner is recorded, and the battle moves to the archive. Frozen means frozen: the published result is never rewritten.

What you get for contributing

The score goes up and the name you enter appears in that battle's activity feed, and that is the whole of it. Leave the name blank and the entry reads as Anonymous.

What you do not get: there are no winnings, no prize pool, no dividends and no payout to supporters, on either side, win or lose. Contributing is not an entry, a stake, or a bet, and backing the winning side pays you nothing. If you are looking for a return on the money, this is not that.

Refunds

Contributions are final. Once a payment is confirmed it is not refunded, and changing your mind is not a reason for a refund.

There are two exceptions, both of them money that was never counted toward a score: a payment that is confirmed after the battle has already closed, and a battle that is cancelled before it finishes. See payment & refunds.
